Annual Rose Pruning Demonstration
Sunday, January 20, 2008, 1 to 3 p.m.
The public is invited to the U.C. Riverside Botanic Gardens to attend the Annual Rose Pruning Demonstration. The demonstration is scheduled for Sunday, January 20, 2008 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Rose Garden. (In case of rain on January 20, the demonstration will be postponed to the following Sunday, January 27). Botanic Gardens Volunteers and local experts will demonstrate how to prune hybrid tea, floribunda, miniature roses and climbers. Door prizes will be awarded to selected attendees.
Started in 1975, the Gardens' rose collection boasts more than 300 rose bushes of various types from around the world, some dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, making it one of the most comprehensive public displays of roses in the Inland Empire. All of the roses growing in the lower garden are award-winners.
Parking at the Gardens is 25 cents per hour (overflow parking may be more) and the suggested admission donation to the Gardens is $1. The Rose Pruning Demonstration is free, though donations are always gratefully accepted. For more information on the Rose Pruning Demonstration contact us.

U.C. Riverside Botanic Gardens Docent Training Spring 2008
Beginning Wednesday, February 6, 9 a.m.
The first session of the Botanic Gardens Docent Training Program for 2008 will take place on Wednesday, February 6, at 9 a.m. in the U.C. Riverside Botanic Gardens Conference Room. Classes will continue the following five Wednesday's, same time, same place. There will be $15 materials charge for the classes and parking is 25 cents per hour at the Gardens.
The first class will cover the role of UCRBG Docents and the training they receive, and an overview of the Botanic Gardens and its activities. A walking tour of the Gardens will be included. One of the primary missions of the Gardens is to act as an educational resource to the community and the key role for the Docents is to provide assistance with Garden tours for school children and some adult groups.
Being a UCRBG Docent is a great way to learn about the Gardens while fulfilling a much needed volunteer role. The first session will provide you the information you need to decide if being a UCRBG Docent is in your future. "The Hemmenway Garden"
Visit and learn from this recently renovated (now NO front lawn) 'Two Worlds' garden of Buck and Yvonne Hemmenway, both Master Gardeners, nursery owners, and avid collectors. Their cactus and succulent
gardens consists of old world South African, and new world American species, all fascinating, many rare.

"The Maloof Foundation"
This garden visit is truly a garden tour. We will meet at the Maloof Foundation for Arts and Crafts, a 5 acre private foundation and botanic garden in Alta Loma. This diverse water-wise garden is a combination of California native and Mediterranean plants. Attendees will learn how to create the look of this beautiful garden on any size lot.

"The Block and Scott Gardens"
Two one-acre plus gardens in one class! The Richard and Jane Block, and the Starke and Tandy Scott
gardens are in southeast Riverside, near Box Canyon. There is much to see and learn from both beautiful and diverse gardens; both with elevation differences of 20 feet or more, and both with rocky decomposed granite soil and many fascinating plants obtained from UCR Botanic Garden Plant sales.

"The Sanquist Residence"
Master Gardener Marc Chacon will tell how he helped to create this beautiful and unique garden at the 3 acre Sanquist residence. This 1950 Mediterranean-style home in the Riverside orange groves has a
fascinating combination of garden areas including a Japanese Shade Garden, a Mediterranean section
featuring grasses and unique ground covers, and pastureland on which longhorn cattle graze.

"The Coleman Garden"
Home owner and presenter Jill Coleman is a Master Gardener and a judge of the Riverside Flower Show
and Garden Tours. Her 1/2 acre garden, which features raised beds and little lawn, reflects her fondness for unique plants, and especially for those that enhance her floral designs.
Classes help raise funds for the UCR Botanic Garden. Each class is $30 for Friends, $35 for

Primavera in the Gardens 2008
The tenth Annual PRIMAVERA IN THE GARDENS is coming! Riverside’s premiere wine and food tasting event takes place on Sunday, May 18th from 2 to 5 pm at the U.C. Riverside Botanic Gardens. 600 people attended Primavera in the Gardens in 2007.
The intimate beauty of the Botanic Gardens provides the perfect setting for this festive spring celebration. Live music wafts through the trees along with the aroma of delicious food from local restaurants and caterers. And everywhere, California wines! The Primavera fund raiser typically features wines from vineyards and wineries such as Benziger Family Winery, Callaway Vineyards and Winery, Faulkner Winery, Galleano Winery, Hart Winery, Imagery Estate Winery, Maurice Car’rie Van Roekel Vineyards and Winery, Joseph Filippi Winery and Vineyards, Mount Palomar Winery, Oak Mountain Winery, South Coast Winery and Resort, Temecula Hills Winery and Vineyard, Thornton Winery, Vintage Vaults and Wilson Creek Winery and Vineyard as well as beers from Riverside Brewery. (The actual list of participating wineries will be posted once final arrangements are made.)
An impressive roster of local restaurants and caterers provide tantalizing appetizers and refreshments. The list of participating vendors from Primavera 2006 typifies the variety and quality: Baily’s Old Town Dining, Café Sevilla, Ciao Bella, Coffee Roasters No. 1, Gerard’s French Restaurant, Jammin’ Bread, Mario’s Place, Mexicali Bar and Grill, Napa 29, Raxx Barbeque and Brewing Company, Simple Simon’s, Tamale Factory and UCR Dining Services.
Donations for this annual event are $45 per person. The proceeds benefit the Botanic Gardens’ many deserving projects. To receive advance tickets, reservations should be postmarked by May 9.
